Kid Approved Guide to May Events

The warm weather has arrived, spring is fully sprung and summer is just around the corner. Along with all that great stuff is the return of so many fun annual events. May is crammed with family-friendly events in Surrey, Delta and White Rock, and we’ve got them all covered.

Cloverdale Rodeo

It’s a not-to-be-missed classic! The Cloverdale Rodeo is the perfect destination for the long weekend, May 18 – 21. This event hosts cowboys and cowgirls from all over North America, with exciting competition in bareback riding, barrel racing, bull riding, the rodeo clown act and more. Plus a an extensive midway with time-honoured carnival games and treats, and all the favourite rides. Don’t miss the rodeo parade through the heart of historic Cloverdale, starting at 10am on Saturday May 19.

Calling all teachers! The Surrey Children’s Festival returns! This is a great field trip opportunity with special pricing for school groups, and so much to learn and explore. There is a jam-packed line up of performances, plus the Festival Parade dance party, ongoing arts activities, roving performances and a storytelling tent. Don’t miss it: May 24 to 26 at the Surrey Arts Centre, Bear Creek Park, 13750 88 Ave.

“See you Under the Sea!” at Ladner May Days. Three days of fun are capped with the May Days Parade through Ladner Village, Sunday May 27 at noon. Admission is FREE to the fairgrounds, and many of the actives are also available at no cost. Kids will love the petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, live bands, storytelling and of course, rides and food. Find it at Memorial Park, 5010 47 Ave, May 25 to 27.

Farmers Markets

And with all this sunshines comes the arrival of farmers’ market season! Fresh produce, home baked goods, hand poured candles, local honey…. the list goes on. Opening this month are these Kid Approved favs:

White Rock Farmers Market

The White Rock Farmers Market has been voted the best large market in BC and boasts a wide selection of local produce, hand crafted goods, fresh breads, organic meat and eggs and much more. It’s located in the heart of the White Rock shopping district, so pop by some of the locally owned shops after perusing the market. Or head down to the beach for a market inspired picnic. Check it out every Sunday until October, from 10-2 at 15154 Russell Ave.

North Delta Farmer’s Market

This market is a lovely representation of a neighbourhood famers’ market. Loads of free parking, adjacent to a fantastic park and always with crafts or activities for the kiddos, this is a very accessible destination for families. Eat lunch at one of the many food trucks, or stock up on picnic supplies and relax in the park at the outdoor pool. Every Sunday from 10-2 at the North Delta Recreation Centre, 11415 84 Ave.
